Car donation FAQ
----------------------------
What documents do I need to donate my car or other vehicles?
You will need the title of the vehicle to donate it.
Note: If there are multiple owners listed on the title, all of them will need to sign to donate the car or other vehicle.
What if the title of the vehicle is owned by someone else?
The person on the title will need to sign.
What happens if my name has changed and the title has my older name?
You must sign the title as per the name shown on the title.
Does the car or other vehicles need to be in running condition?
No, the vehicles need not be in running condition to be donated. Please call and check, in case you are in doubt.
What type of vehicles are accepted as donations?
Cars, RVs, trailers, trucks, and vans.
How does the tax deduction work?
If the donated vehicle sells for $500 or less, you can claim a tax deduction on $500 without filling out any extra paperwork. You can write the deduction amount when you do your taxes on the IRS 1040 Form.
If the donated car sells for more than $500 but less than$5000, then you will be able to claim the exact amount for which your vehicle sold with a 1098-c form (for motor vehicles) or an 8283 form Section-A (e-filing general property).
If the donated car sells for more than $5,000, you should use a 1098-c form or an 8283 form (section B), with a written appraisal.
For detailed information on the tax deduction, please see our car donation to charity tax deduction page.

How do I find out if you cover my area?
Except for Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, all other locations are covered normally. You can always call and confirm.
Do I need to keep records after I donate the car?
The IRS requires you to retain the following information for your records:
Name and address of the charity
Date of donation
Place where you donated your vehicle
Description of vehicle (year, make, and model)
Written acknowledgment or legal receipt from the charity (when sold for more than $500)
